Why Choose a Courthouse Wedding in Los Angeles

A Los Angeles courthouse ceremony can be just as special (and honestly, sometimes even more meaningful) than a big traditional wedding. It’s the two of you, committing to forever, without the pressure or chaos—and I get to come along to document every real, unfiltered moment. You don’t need a fancy venue or a huge guest list to have a beautiful wedding day.

Courthouse weddings in LA are simple, romantic, and totally customizable. You can show up in your favorite outfits, bring your closest people, and celebrate your way—whether that’s grabbing tacos after, popping champagne in the parking lot, or heading to the beach for sunset portraits. That’s what I love most about them. You get to create a day that feels 100% like you.

That said, there’s still a bit of planning involved when it comes to getting married at the courthouse. I’ve photographed at places like Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Pasadena, and every location has its own rules and flow. I’m here to help guide you through it all so your day runs smoothly and feels effortless.

Popular Los Angeles Courthouses for Your Civil Ceremony

. Beverly Hills Courthouse (Beverly Hills Courthouse – LA County)
📍 9355 Burton Way, Beverly Hills, CA 90210
This one’s a favorite for a reason. It has palm trees, clean white walls, and modern architecture that gives your photos a timeless, SoCal look. It's also super close to iconic spots like Greystone Mansion or Beverly Gardens Park for post-ceremony portraits.

Downtown Los Angeles – Stanley Mosk Courthouse
📍 111 N Hill St, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Classic and centrally located, this courthouse is in the heart of DTLA. After your ceremony, you’re just steps away from Grand Park, The Broad, or the Walt Disney Concert Hall — perfect for vibrant, urban photos.

 Santa Monica Courthouse
📍 1725 Main St, Santa Monica, CA 90401
Laid-back and coastal, this spot is ideal for couples who want to keep things simple but still have beachy vibes. You’re close to the Santa Monica Pier and Palisades Park for stunning ocean views.

Pasadena Courthouse (LA County Registrar – East District)
📍 300 E Walnut St, Pasadena, CA 91101
This is not the Pasadena City Hall (though you can take photos there after!) but it’s a convenient and quiet option for couples in the San Gabriel Valley. Bonus: Nearby cafes and Old Town Pasadena make for a cute date-day combo.

Van Nuys Courthouse
📍 6230 Sylmar Ave, Van Nuys, CA 91401
A solid choice if you're in the Valley. It’s not as scenic as others, but it’s usually less crowded and easier for weekday ceremonies. You can always head to a nearby park or garden for post-wedding portraits.

Norwalk Courthouse (Main Registrar-Recorder’s Office)
📍 12400 Imperial Hwy, Norwalk, CA 90650
This is where many couples get both their marriage license and ceremony done on the same day. It’s a popular one-stop-shop for everything wedding-official. The grounds are simple but clean, and it’s easy to navigate.

Planning Tips for a Los Angeles Courthouse Wedding

 Make an Appointment Early
Marriage license appointments and civil ceremonies at courthouses can book out weeks in advance — especially at popular ones like Beverly Hills or Downtown LA. As soon as you have a date in mind, reserve your spot through the Los Angeles County Registrar’s website.

Know the Paperwork
To get legally married, you’ll need:
  • A valid photo ID (for both partners)
  • To apply for a marriage license
  • Possibly an officiant (if your courthouse doesn’t provide one)

Some courthouses offer both license + ceremony appointments, while others require two separate bookings. Double-check the details!

Choose Your Courthouse Wisely
Not all courthouses are created equal!
Want palm trees and clean, bright architecture? Beverly Hills.

Love city vibes and cool backdrops? DTLA.
Prefer something quieter? Santa Monica or Van Nuys might be your speed.

Each location has its own style, so pick one that fits your vibe — and your post-ceremony photo plans.

Dress However You Want
There are no rules here. Whether you’re rocking a mini dress and sneakers or a full suit and heels — do you. I’ve seen everything from vintage-inspired glam to totally casual outfits that still feel special. If you feel good in it, it’s the right look.

Plan Something After
Just because you're keeping it simple doesn’t mean it has to end at the courthouse.
Plan a post-ceremony picnic, a photo session around town, dinner at your favorite spot, or even a beach walk. It’s your wedding day — do whatever makes it feel fun and celebratory.

Bring a Photographer (Hi)
Courthouse elopements are quick, and those little moments can fly by. Having a photographer there means you’ll actually get to see all the emotions again later. Plus, we can sneak off after for some relaxed, just-married portraits around the city.

Eloping on a Weekday = Less Stress
Courthouses are way less crowded during the week — and so are all the cool photo spots nearby. If you can swing a weekday elopement, do it. You’ll thank yourself later when you're not dodging crowds or waiting in line forever.

Add-On Ideas to Make It Yours

Just because you're keeping it low-key doesn’t mean it can’t be meaningful, stylish, or fun. Here are a few simple ways to make your LA courthouse elopement feel uniquely you:

Grab coffee or tacos after
— and I’ll tag along to document it.Whether it’s your favorite taco truck or your go-to coffee shop, let’s make it part of your story. Casual, cozy, and full of personality.

Plan a golden hour session at the beach or Griffith Park right after.
The courthouse is just the beginning. We can head to the coast for soft, dreamy light or take in those iconic LA skyline views from Griffith. You'll get a mix of documentary + romantic portraits without rushing.
Invite a few loved ones to celebrate on the spot.

Courthouse weddings don’t have to be just the two of you. Bring your parents, best friends, or even your dog. A few hugs, happy tears, and a little confetti? Always a good idea.

Write your own vows.
Even if it’s just a few words scribbled on a notepad, personal vows add so much heart to a courthouse ceremony. You’ll remember what you said forever — and I’ll be there to capture those real, emotional moments.

Bring a bouquet.
Whether it's a full floral arrangement or something you picked up from the farmer’s market, a bouquet adds color, movement, and personality to your photos — plus, it just feels special.

FAQ -  Los Angeles Courthouse Weddings

Which courthouses do you photograph at?
I’ve photographed courthouse weddings at the Pasadena Courthouse, which is one of the most popular and photogenic spots in LA County — think arches, palm trees, and romantic architecture. While Pasadena is my main location, I'm always happy to explore other courthouses in the LA area if you're getting married elsewhere.

How do we book our courthouse wedding?
You’ll need to book your marriage license appointment and ceremony through the LA County Clerk. I’ll walk you through the steps if it’s your first time — I’ve helped lots of couples navigate it!

How much coverage do we need?
The courthouse ceremony and signing usually take about 30 minutes. To make sure you have time for family photos, couple portraits, and a relaxed experience without feeling rushed, I recommend booking at least 1 hour and 30 minutes of coverage. This allows us to document everything meaningfully and even explore nearby spots for extra portraits if you'd like.

How far in advance should we book?
Some courthouse slots go fast — especially at Beverly Hills and Pasadena. I recommend reaching out 4–6 weeks before your date. But if it's a last-minute elopement, message me anyway. I may still be available!

Can we bring guests or pets?
Yes! Most courthouses allow a few guests and some allow pets too (especially outdoors). If you’re bringing your dog, I’m 100% in — just bring a leash and maybe a cute outfit.

Do you help with planning?
Yes. I’ll help with timing, what to expect, location ideas for portraits, and even what to bring. You’re not doing this alone — I’m here to make it easy and fun.

What should we wear?
Whatever makes you feel amazing. Some couples go full formal, some keep it casual. I’ll send a style guide once you book, and I’m happy to help you decide.

When do we get our photos?
You’ll receive sneak peeks within 48 hours and your full gallery within 2–3 weeks. It’ll be delivered online so you can easily download and share.

Do we need a permit for photos?
Not for courthouse steps or quick portraits nearby. But if you want photos at a beach or park after, I’ll let you know if a permit is needed and help you secure one if so.

How do we book you?

All I need is a signed contract and a $300 retainer. From there, we’re officially booked and planning begins!
