Wow! This wedding was one for the books, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. It was truly an honor to document Wesley and Jackson’s intimate backyard wedding ceremony. This Pasadena wedding was held on the lawn at a gorgeous home with large shade trees, manicured gardens, a pool, stone fireplace, and string lights. Add in a large dance floor and colorful florals, and you’ve got yourself a dreamy setup right in your own backyard. (If you’re looking for inspiration on how to pull it off, their day is the perfect example.)

But as picture-perfect as it all was, the thing I loved most about Wesley and Jackson’s wedding day was the intentionality and heart behind it all. Those two were fully present in every moment, enjoying their special day to the fullest without fussing over the details. This was their day, and they weren’t about to let anything get in the way of that. A backyard wedding was just what they needed to squeeze every ounce out of their celebration with those they love.

Why Backyard Weddings Are the New Trend in Intimate Celebrations

In recent years, backyard weddings have emerged as the new trend in intimate celebrations. With the rise of smaller, more intimate gatherings, many couples are opting for the charm and versatility of their own backyard as the perfect wedding venue. Whether it’s a rustic farmhouse, a suburban garden, or a sleek urban patio, backyards provide a unique and personal setting that traditional wedding venues often lack.

(Pssst—Worried your own home won’t suit your needs? You might consider a vacation rental or beach house!)

One of the main driving forces behind the growing popularity of backyard weddings is the desire for a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Couples can create a warm and inviting ambiance that allows for a deeper connection with their loved ones. In addition, backyard weddings offer endless possibilities for customization. From the decor to the catering options, couples can tailor every detail to reflect their own unique style and preferences.

With DIY touches and eco-friendly decorations, backyard weddings allow couples to showcase their creativity and craft a truly personalized experience. Plus, the cost savings can be significant, making backyard weddings an attractive option for couples on a budget.

With their inherent charm and endless possibilities for customization, backyard weddings are here to stay as the new trend in intimate celebrations.

While at-home weddings offer countless benefits, they do require careful planning and consideration. Here are some tips to help you plan your own backyard wedding and ensure a seamless and memorable celebration.

Planning a Backyard Wedding: Tips & Considerations

1. Assess your space

Before diving into the planning process, assess your backyard space to determine if it can accommodate your desired wedding size and layout. Consider factors such as the size of your guest list, the space required for seating, dance floor, and any additional areas you may need, such as a catering tent or a designated area for children.

2. Prepare for weather

One of the challenges of outdoor weddings is the unpredictability of weather. Create a backup plan in case of rain or extreme heat. Renting an event tent can provide protection from the elements while still allowing you to enjoy the beauty of your backyard. Additionally, consider providing shade options for your guests, such as umbrellas or covered areas.

3. Notify your neighbors

Kindly inform your neighbors about your wedding plans to avoid any potential conflicts or noise complaints. Discuss the timing of the event, parking arrangements, and any other relevant details to ensure a smooth and respectful celebration.

4. Rent the necessary equipment

Depending on the size and layout of your backyard, you may need to rent additional equipment such as tables, chairs, lighting, sound systems, and portable restrooms. Make a comprehensive list of your needs and work with a reputable rental company to ensure everything is in place for your big day.

5. Consider logistics

Logistics play a crucial role in the success of a backyard wedding. Plan for sufficient parking space, accessible restrooms, and a designated area for catering staff. If you’re hosting a larger wedding, you may also need to consider hiring a professional wedding planner or coordinator to handle the logistics and ensure a seamless flow of events.

6. Create a comfortable atmosphere

Since backyard weddings are more intimate, envision a comfortable atmosphere for your guests. Provide ample seating options, cozy lounging areas, and consider adding heaters or fans depending on the weather. Additionally, consider providing insect repellent or citronella candles to keep bugs at bay.

7. Lighting & ambiance

The right lighting can transform your backyard into a magical setting. Incorporate various lighting elements such as string lights, lanterns, and candles to create a romantic and enchanting atmosphere. Lighting can also serve a practical purpose by illuminating pathways and important areas of the venue.

8. Consider noise restrictions

Check with your local authorities regarding noise restrictions and curfews to ensure your festivities comply with regulations to avoid issues or fines.
